Legal requirements
In accordance with the requirements of the Regulation of the Minister of Health on the quality of water intended for human consumption of March 29, 2007, hot water should be tested for the presence of Legionella in all collective accommodation facilities (hotels, guesthouses, social welfare homes, hospitals, etc.). The frequency of tests depends on the degree of colonization of the water installation. An infection level not exceeding 100 cfu/100ml is considered safe.
Legionella water testing
Legionella pneumophila are gram-negative, ciliated aerobic bacilli. Legionella bacteria easily breed in stagnant water tanks and process water systems. They often colonize hot water installations, especially in places with low water consumption. Legionella infection occurs as a result of inhalation of water aerosol, therefore high-risk places include all types of showers, showers, hot tubs, jacuzzis and cooling towers.
Legionella’s high resistance to chlorine is due to its ability to produce a mucilaginous coating outside the cell membrane. A characteristic feature of the bacteria is fluorescence under UV light. Water testing for Legionella lasts up to 10 days. The determination is made by membrane filtration.
