Use of virucidal preparations

As the first commercial laboratory in Poland, we have implemented a virucidal effectiveness test of disinfectants into our offer. The tested and proven effectiveness of disinfectants against viruses is particularly important in the medical field. Patients and staff daily encounter a multitude of pathogens that cause serious diseases.
Another area where virucides cannot be missing is veterinary medicine.
Livestock buildings are an ideal environment for the development and transmission of diseases between animals. Livestock diseases are one of the key causes of farmers’ losses. Therefore, disinfection and prevention play a key role in this area.

 

Virucidal preparations during an epidemic

During the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, the virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants has become very important in areas of everyday life as well.
Biocides appeared in every home, industrial plants, shops or shopping malls. The effectiveness of this type of preparations is therefore a very important element in preventing a pandemic. Only agents whose operation has been confirmed by appropriate tests may be registered in the Office for Registration of Medicinal Products. Thus authorized.

 

Virucidal Effectiveness Study

Testing the virucidal effectiveness of chemical disinfectants is a process that requires a specialized laboratory and qualified personnel.
We evaluate the effectiveness against viruses on the strains identified as model in particular methodologies. The research process itself is very time-consuming and complicated. For testing, we use specially grown and maintained cell lines, and the tests are carried out on living human cells, e.g. lung epithelial cells. These cells are infected with viruses during the test. As a result of infection, cells die. The study also takes into account the cytotoxicity of a given preparation.
If the preparation turns out to be cytotoxic, i.e. apart from the pathogen, it also kills cells, its biocidal effectiveness becomes impossible to define. This is usually the case with very strong preparations containing at least a few active substances.
An interesting fact is that in this respect products based on hypochlorous acid turn out to be very delicate. The process of testing virucidal effectiveness ends with statistical calculations and preparation of a report based on the guidelines of a given methodology.

Virucidal effectiveness is tested according to the following standards

PN-EN 14476 + A2: 2019-08 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative suspension method for the determination of virucidal activity in the medical field – Test method and requirements (Phase 2 / Phase 1)
The methodology of PN-EN 14476 + A2: 2019-08 is used in the case of products for hygienic hand disinfection by rubbing, hygienic hand washing, disinfecting tools by immersion, disinfecting surfaces by wiping and disinfecting textiles.
The model strains in the full spectrum of activity are: Poliovirus type 1, Murine norovirus and Adenovirus type 5. In the limited spectrum: Murine norovirus and Adenovirus type 5, and for enveloped viruses: Vaccinia virus (ATCC® VR-1549 ™). Additionally, we offer the possibility of testing the human coronavirus strain with the designation: (HCoV-229E).

PN-EN 16777: 2019-01 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative surface method for determining the virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants used in the medical field on non-porous surfaces, without mechanical action. Test method and requirements (phase 2 / step 2)
Research acc. PN-EN 16777 methods relate to the assessment of the disinfection efficiency of non-porous surfaces, including the surface of medical devices, without mechanical action.
The test strains are: Murine norovirus, Adenovirus type 5 and Vaccinia virus, Polio virus cannot be tested with this methodology. Products for disinfection with a full virucidal spectrum must also be tested according to methodology PN-EN 14476 + A2: 2019-08.

PN-EN 17111: 2018-12 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics. Quantitative carrier-based method for the determination of virucidal activity for tools used in the medical field – Test method and requirements (phase 2, step 2)
The PN-EN 17111: 2018-12 standard is used in the research of products intended for disinfecting tools, and the model strains (<40stC) are Murine norovirus and Adenovirus type 5, in a limited spectrum (> 40stC): parvovirus, and effectiveness against enveloped viruses is tested against the Vaccinia virus strain.

PN-EN 14675: 2015 Chemical disinfectants and antiseptics – Quantitative suspension determination method Virucidal activity of chemical disinfectants and antiseptics used in the veterinary field – Test method and requirements (Phase 2, Step 1)
This standard refers to products used in the field of veterinary medicine, nutrition, breeding, production, transport and sale of all animals, excluding slaughter as the initial stage of food processing and introduction to the processing industry.
The test strain for the veterinary standard is Bovine Enterovirus Type 1
