Determination of energy value

Energy value is the amount of energy in a given product that the body can absorb through digestion. The energy value is expressed in kilocalories (kcal) and kilojoules (kJ).

Determination of energy value

As of December 13, 2016, EU Regulation 1169/2011 on the provision of food information comes into force. According to the new requirements, the manufacturer must determine and declare the basic parameters of its product, including:

  • Energy value
  • amount of fat,
  • the content of saturated fatty acids,
  • carbohydrate and sugar content,
  • protein content
  • salt content.

One nutritional kilocalorie (1 kcal or 1000 calories) is the amount of energy (heat) available through digestion of food that will raise the temperature of one kilogram of water by one degree Celsius.
