Testing water from a home well is the most important element of preparing your own water intake. Only water of adequate quality can be safely consumed by humans and used in the household. Poor quality water is a direct health hazard. It can also damage sanitary and heating installations and devices.

Water from your own well

Water from your own intake is an excellent source of water for every household. Its availability is often more reliable than water from the water supply system. The legitimacy of building your own well is beyond question, even if connecting to the water supply is not a problem. In many cases, the backyard well is the only source of water for the household. This is particularly often the case when building new houses / estates that are significantly distant from the existing urban or communal network. The costs of building a water connection are often several times greater than the cost of building your own intake along with the entire water treatment system. In small municipal waterworks, there are often problems with water supply, especially in periods of drought and increased consumption, e.g. around Christmas.

Water pollution from wells

All naturally occurring water contains many inorganic compounds, the concentration of which depends on environmental factors. These compounds are often found in amounts exceeding the limit values for drinking water. The most common compounds that exceed the recommended standards are iron and manganese compounds. In this case, it is difficult to talk about water pollution because the presence of these substances is completely natural. Artificial pollution from human activities can be much more serious. The most common pollutants in this case are organic compounds from agricultural activities (pesticides, herbicides) and heavy metals. Massive animal husbandry also brings about pollutants that have so far not been considered at all. The intensive use of pharmaceuticals in breeding means that we are examining the content of antibiotics in groundwater more and more often. Scientific research in this area is currently carried out in many countries, including Poland.

Well Water Testing

The safe consumption of well water requires, first of all, knowledge of its composition. Water treatment technology can be properly designed and selected only on the basis of the results of laboratory tests. It happens that water from your own well is suitable for direct consumption, but nowadays it is a rare phenomenon and it applies only to non-urbanized regions. When building your own intake, you should, in principle, take into account the purchase of treatment technology.

The scope of well water tests

The study of water from the well is divided into two ranges: microbiological examination and physicochemical examination. As part of the microbiological test, the content of pathogenic bacteria in water, such as Escherichia coli, enterococci and Costridium perfringens bacteria. In addition, the study can be extended to Pseudomonas aeruginosa and the total number of microorganisms.

The physicochemical tests consist of determinations of inorganic compounds such as iron, manganese, hardness, nitrates, nitrites, ammonium ion, chlorides, sulphates, oxidability as well as basic physicochemical parameters: pH, color, and turbidity.
